Rally of New Zealand

Two months out from the Rally of New Zealand, organisers are getting down to the finer details of planning for the August running of New Zealand’s round of the FIA World Rally Championship (WRC).

The high level planning for the event’s dates, the rally route and general layout of the service park and rally headquarters at Mystery Creek Events Centre was completed months ago, says chairman of the organising committee Chris Carr.

“At this stage, we’re getting into detailed planning of various elements, such as coordinating guest invitations with our event sponsor, Repco, to the ceremonial start and hospitality venues, reminding media about accreditation requirements, and ensuring property owners along the rally route have all the information they need about road closure times,” says Carr.

Carr says while Rally New Zealand has always been regarded internationally as one of the better run events on the WRC calendar, having a sponsor like Repco onboard allows the event to lift to a new level.

Entries for the FIA World Championship event close on 23 July, a month before the rally, but already organisers believe Kiwi rally fans will see one of the largest fields of WRC cars in some years.

The Rally of New Zealand takes place from Thursday 28 August until Sunday 31 August. It is the 11th of the 15 rounds in the 2008 FIA World Rally Championship, the sixth of eight rounds in the 2008 FIA Production World Rally Championship and the fifth of six rounds in the 2008 New Zealand Rally Championship.
